Though the Bible is more than a book of stories, the stories in the Bible teach important biblical truths about God, man, and salvation. But these stories must be intentionally taught in a manner that highlights the biblical themes and exalts God’s character. He Established a Testimony introduces young children to the greatness of God in the Old Testament. Children are acquainted with a big picture of God and presented with a foundation of Bible doctrine. Sixty-four Old Testament story references are arranged chronologically, and key themes, which build a foundation to know and love God, are emphasized repeatedly to reinforce the concepts with children and to show the amazing consistency of a God who never changes. The curriculum can be taught in 64 weeks or 52 weeks.
Bible stories are not written out in He Established a Testimony. Instead, teachers prepare their own lesson notes to acquaint children with a great God whose character never changes. Each lesson includes a summary of the main storyline, a list of key themes to consider emphasizing, and options to choose from for opening illustrations and application questions.
We have been commanded to acquaint the next generation with both the acts and the words of God. When we blend our own hearts of faith and affection for God with the powerful stories of our great God of the Old Testament, and the testimony of the character and acts of Jesus, the Word of God will go forth with power and conviction. Little children can see and know the greatness of God. By showing children the heart of God through Old and New Testament stories, we have the privilege of being part of God’s work in their hearts to set their hope in Him (Psalm 78:5-7).
This curriculum includes references from the English Standard Version (ESV) of the Bible. Since the teacher writes his or her own notes to share the lesson, the teacher can choose the Bible translation he or she prefers to use. The Foundation Verses listed with each lesson are provided in both ESV and the New International Version (NIV).
