Lord willing, I will soon begin my 40th year in children’s ministry. One of the things that God has used to sustain me and provide me with continued delight in this endeavor is godly leadership. I have been blessed to have numerous pastors, shepherds, and other ministry leaders who have spurred me on year after year.
So, dear children’s ministry leaders, as a longtime teacher and volunteer, here are a few things that I have found most helpful.
Equip – Make sure we have everything we need: all curriculum components, adequate staffing, and any other room requirements. Even the seemingly little things can make a big difference (i.e. having a whiteboard that’s in good condition). Also, provide us with the necessary information and training for our specific roles and expectations.
Be visible – If at all possible, show up in the classroom on occasion. See what’s happening “on the ground”. Not only are the children blessed by this, but so are the volunteers.
Pray – Please be praying for us and the children we minister to. Consider a resource such as Big, Bold, Biblical Prayers for the Next Generation and send us a note or email sharing a specific prayer focus for the week or month.
Advocate – Sometimes it can feel like children’s ministry is not given a high priority within the wider church body. Decisions might be made that don’t fully take into account what’s required for the deep discipleship of children. Too few volunteers can stress out and discourage faithful volunteers. We need you as an advocate, heralding a glorious, biblical vision for the next generation so that the whole church embraces and supports this sacred responsibility.
Correct – Over the years, there have been times when I have needed loving correction: I grumbled to classroom volunteers, taught a Bible lesson in an insincere manner, was harsh in addressing a child, etc. I was so thankful when ministry leaders provided correction when they observed these kinds of sinful attitudes.
Encourage – When you point to specific evidences of God’s grace in my ministry to children, my heart swells with joy! A quick word of encouragement - shared in the hallway after class, a phone call, an email or text – all serve to sustain me and keep me coming back year after year.
