Celebrating 25 years of next generation discipleship

Celebrating 25 years of next generation discipleship

This week, we hosted a celebration event for Truth78’s 25th anniversary. You can still watch the replay if you’d like [and you can see the impact video here that has an echo for a portion of the livestream].

Here are some of the thoughts I shared at that event:

As we look back on 25 years of ministry and dream about what the next 25 years may hold, it is evident that God “is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine” (Ephesians 3:20). The mission of Truth78 today to inspire and equip churches and homes around the world is way beyond anything I was thinking in 1998.

In the spring of 1996, Sally and I were given the unspeakable privilege of leading the parenting and children’s discipleship ministry at Bethlehem Baptist Church. God birthed in many of us in the congregation a relentless desire to  impart the same God-centered, Christ-exalting teaching we were receiving each Sunday to the children growing up in our church, including our two daughters. But, we knew we needed a clear vision and plan for teaching the whole counsel of God so that the children’s eyes would be opened to His glory and their hearts would be ignited to worship and set their hope in Him.  At that time, we had no vision for a ministry beyond our local church. However, not only was God imprinting this vision and passion on the hearts of brothers and sisters at Bethlehem, but we were amazed and encouraged to discover that God had been igniting the same passion in others across the country and around the world.

In 1998, Children Desiring God was founded mainly as a way to serve the growing number of churches and individuals who were asking for help and access to the resources we were developing. In 2018, the ministry rebranded to expand and accelerate the mission of comprehensive discipleship to the next generation. Now, with over 100 discipleship resources and countless numbers of prayer partners, customers, and financial partners like you who have embraced this vision, we thank God for the steady stream of testimonies that have come from around the world.

Just last Friday we received a note from one of our Canadian friends. Here is her testimonial:

I want to express my deep gratitude for this ministry. We've been using your materials to disciple children in Vancouver since 2010. I was a 19 year old Sunday School teacher at that time.

When I became the ministry head in 2014, I started using the training resources to equip myself and the other teachers for further work. The kids I once taught became teachers themselves, and devoted to teaching Biblical literacy and worldview. I became a parent in 2018, and now am part of a "different" full-time children's ministry: with 4 children ages 5 and under! I am realizing more and more how our world keeps changing around them and their generation, and the unique hardship they will face. It's a blessing and a privilege for my husband and I to partner with this ministry in making disciples of the next generation. Glory to God!

As we look forward to the next 25 years, I dream that Truth78’s message would grow all the more in its influence and impact on church leaders and parents, so that the hearts of our children would be recaptured by intentional discipleship and more children growing up in churches and homes would set their hope in God and persevere in their faith their whole lives. I also dream that Truth78’s discipleship tools would be even more widely available and used across the U.S. and around the world.  With our new subscription options and the goal of translating some of them in up to 40 languages around the world, I pray that there would be more exposure and access, so that more churches, homes, and language groups will be equipped with what they need for deep discipleship.

Thank you for your partnership with us over these past 25 years. There is still so much work to be done. Please keep laboring side by side with us until Jesus returns.
