“We live in the most distracted society that has ever existed. Every hour, we are bombarded with potential distractions.” I read that yesterday morning while checking my email and reading news online–guilty as charged. The author, Eric Thoennes, went on to say, “If we treated our Bibles the way most of us treat our phones, we would be saturated with biblical wisdom” (Desiring God, No One Drifts Into Godliness).
Thoennes pointed to the call of God to make the best use of our time because the days are evil. The temptation to distraction was so great in Paul’s day that he commanded it twice of two different churches (Ephesians 5:16, Colossians 4:5). How much greater is the urgency now!
With so many options, how do we choose what’s best? How can we discern how to spend our days? Paul told Timothy to “Think over what I say, for the Lord will give you understanding in everything” (2 Timothy 2:7). That’s similar advice to what Solomon gave: “My son, be attentive to my words; incline your ear to my sayings. Let them not escape from your sight; keep them within your heart. For they are life to those who find them, and healing to all their flesh (Proverbs 4:20-22).
Who doesn’t want health and vitality? There is only one path to spiritual life and physical refreshment–God’s Word.
There can be no better way to spend your time in 2026 than to meditate on God’s Word and “hide it in your heart,” David’s poetic way of saying "memorize it." And on the first of January, we’ll be starting again at the beginning of the five-year Fighter Verses cycle with Set 1.
Beginning January 4, 2026, we’ll memorize Deuteronomy 7:9,
Know therefore that the LORD your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations,
We can’t know what obstacles or opportunities we’ll face in 2026, but we know that our God is the faithful, covenant keeping God who loves us and will be with us in the year ahead.
This is a great time to renew your commitment to Scripture memory. If you memorize with us in January, you will be 52 passages richer by the end of the year. You can find the full list of passages, weekly devotionals, and memorization tools at FighterVerses.com.
To make it easier, we’ve updated our free printable bookmarks. My husband Steve prints off a sheet of them each year to give to me and our kids. They’re the simplest way to keep track of what you’ve already memorized and what’s up next.
There’s no better way to spend your time than storing up God’s Word in your heart. If you’re new to Fighter Verses, download your free Fighter Verses Guide to Scripture Memory. We hope it will help you and encourage those you love to join you in this essential spiritual discipline.
Together, let’s memorize Scripture in 2026 to fight the good fight of faith.
